The Sixth C: You CAN Learn to COMMUNICATE More Effectively with Your Loved One

BALM | March 15, 2013

In this series of 7 posts, we are exploring the 7 C’s. Today our topic is The Sixth C: You CAN Learn to COMMUNICATE More Effectively with Your Loved One

When people ask me what I do, I tell them that I help the families of addicts get their lives back and communicate more effectively with their loved one. And indeed, the process of Being a Loving Mirror helps the families of addicts do both of these things.

Today we will briefly discuss communication.

Have you ever seen or heard your loved one shut down during a conversation with you? Though sometimes subtle, this process is often detectable whether it is happening on the phone or in person.

It might look like, “Okay, mom, gotta go now…” followed by days or even weeks of not picking up the phone or answering your texts.

Or, it might be louder as in, “If you don’t stop putting me down and blaming everything on me…Sheesh. I’m going out with my friends. At least they don’t make me feel like such a failure.”

Or even, “yeah dad, you’re right, i’m a loser. I’ll probably never do anything with my life…”

Or how about this one: Click. That’s the sound of the phone hanging up in the middle or at the end of one of your diatribes. Or Slam. Your loved one has hung up on you or walked out on you, maybe not for the first time because the way you were talking was not something they could handle.

There are many variations on the theme, but I think you get the picture.

If you are the parent of an 18 to 28 year old, having very little contact with you could be your adult child’s MO even if they are not an addict. And, if you talk AT them rather than converse lovingly WITH them, chances are, they are just not that anxious to connect very often…

So, what’s a parent to do?

That, my friends is what BALM® is all about. Learning new ways to think about and communicate with ourselves and our loved ones.

A Loving Mirror operates from a quiet place within, a place unaffected by the ups and downs of other people’s words and behaviors. The BALM® program teaches you how to get there.

Once operating as a Loving Mirror, you CAN share your point without ruining the relationship.

And that, of course, is what the entire BALM® program is about. In our 7 Steps to BALM, 8 week, transformational course, we show you exactly how to implement this learning into your life. If you are interested in taking this course, and would like to join our BALM Community, contact Tracy at tward@familyrecoveryresources.com or call (502) 724-2686.

Stay tuned for the next blog on the 7th C: You are always at CHOICE!

Until then,

Have a Loving Day!

Best,

Coach Bev
